Week 2 -- Globe Cake

We just finished up week two of homeschooling, today. Part of our ''fun'' was to make a cake like the globe. (we've been working on lattitude, longitude, map grids, learning the 7 continents and the names of the oceans as well.)

Science Experiment Week 2

If your kitchen, doubles as your Science Lab...you might be a homeschooler. :)

Today we did our first experiment of the year. The boys each had two pieces of celery. From one, they removed the Xylem and they left the other as their control. They had to discuss what they thought they might find tomorrow.

Tomorrow I'll update with pictures of what they do find. :)

Week 1-Nature Notebooks

We finished up week 1 of My Father's World-Exploring Countries and Cultures today.

It was a good week & I think we are going to have a really good year.

We started our nature notebooks this week. It's our first attempt at this but the boys had a really good time.

We had some bumps and adjustments. I am also doing K with my youngest son & working at keeping my 3 yo daughter from destroying the rest of the house while we are schooling. LOL The first few weeks are always out of sync, as you learn the groove. I still feel like this year holds great promise and we will learn a lot and enjoy the process.

A little peek...

A little peek..., originally uploaded by Kudzu and Koolaid.

[if you click on the picture it will take you to flickr where you can see the picture with notes regarding what is in each cubby.]

into the homeschooling cabinet...

I know I kind of knock on our groovy retro house a good bit....but for homeschooling it has proven to have a pretty sweet layout. :)

[for those new to the blog, this is not our home. We are currently living in New Mexico while my hubby is on detail and this house is a govt rental provided for us]

Blowing the dust off the old blog...

My Father's World, originally uploaded by Kudzu and Koolaid.

So, um, yeah...I can't believe how long it's been. I've maintained my daily blog & family blog--but if you've read the archives then you know getting pregnant with AE put a nix in the homeschooling blog. I was reading a bit earlier and was just kind of in awe. This was active when Nathan was in K. He's going to be in 4th grade this year.

WOW

I recently ordered our curriculum for this school year and joined a blog ring assoicated with it-and thus wanted to get the blog back active so i can post (hopefully) weekly with our updates and progress.

For now, a bit of an introduction. I'm Cheri. I've been married to my hubby for 12.5 years and we have four children. Nathan is 9 (soon to be 10) and going into the 4th grade. Daniel is 7 (soon to be 8, it's very important you acknowledge that they are ALMOST the next age! :) ) and going into the 3rd grade. I will be using My Father's World, Exploring Countries and Cultures with them this year. Elijah is 5 (6 in October) and he will begin K in My Father's World. Bringing up the caboose we have Anna-Elizabeth. She is newly three and I have no formal plans for her this year-however, based on things of late I think she's going to end up doing stuff-because she is DETERMINED to go to school with her guys. :D

As I mentioned we are using My Father's World. In the past we have used several different curriculums, that seeking to find the best fit, thing. To this point I've used:

Five in a Row
My Father's World
Ambleside Online
Christian Liberty Press

and this year, we are coming home (and staying with My Father's World) You'll notice with all except last year & using Christian Liberty Press-that we are very CM inclined. Let me say I was not disappointed at all last year with what we covered and accomplished, but the style just wasn't what we have grown to love and learn from best.

So, as you can see in the photo (and if you click it-it will take you to flickr where you can read notes regarding what is pictured) our curriculm is here & we are ready for our new year.

We are starting school on August 11 & will be doing a year round schedule. We will be on for 6 weeks and off for 2 weeks.

Thanks for stopping by and for sharing our year with us.

Still going...

I know I haven't posted in a bit. If you follow my regular blog you know that I'm pregnant and the first trimester kept me tired...lol. We have been doing school I just haven't posted here faithfully. We have Vol. 2 of FIAR to start next week so my plan is to get back to posting then.
